What is Down and Feather?

Down is the layer of light fluffy clusters, closest to the skin of duck, geese and other waterfowl. These clusters act as insulation and are protected by the outer layer of feather. The down clusters trap body heat while the feathers shield against moisture.

What is the best Fill?

Eider Down - the warmest down comes from the endangered Eider Duck. Only a limited supply of Eider Down is available annually as the down may only be harvested off the ground after the nesting season has come and gone.

Siberian Goose Down is next in line. The ultimate Siberian Down is taken from the neck and upper chest areas of the birds that have matured.

Moskus Down from the Moskovy Ducks is next. The down is superior to most other duck down which heats "the next best thing" to Siberian or Eider Down.

Goose Down - geese from northerly areas will produce down with greater thermal qualities. The down clusters are large and capture, store and reflect well the heat that the body generates.

Duck Down is the least thermally efficient down but is the most cost efficient.

What is TOG?

Tog is simply a measure of how efficiently the duvet retains body heat. Your choice will be governed by bedroom temperature, sex, age and physical condition.

Metabolism: Higher rates mean higher heat output | Sex: Generally women are colder than men by 5 degrees | Age: Older people are generally colder, due to the metabolism slowing down | Fitness: A heavier person has more natural insulation.

Price Factors

Like all other products there are many cheap varieties around. Price will be affected by the different methods used to collect, process and clean the feather and down. Down from the intensive Down Farming Industry is not only inferior but inhuman. Also cleaning processes are so important as these products are by your face all night long.
